We are pleased to present Spotlight: John Marin: Maine Summer as part of the gallery's 25th anniversary programming, corresponding with the 250th birthday of the United States.
As part of our yearlong celebration of American art to mark these two milestones, this Spotlight exhibition highlights how Maine was a beloved subject and rich source of inspiration for John Marin's innovative and masterful work.
John Marin is an essential artist in the development of American modernism. As a key member of Alfred Stieglitz's influential circle of artists, Marin enjoyed enormous success throughout his career and was even voted "the best painter in America" in a 1948 Look magazine poll. He is best known as a master watercolorist, but also created exceptional oil paintings, drawings, and prints. In 1950 he became the first American to be given an exhibition at the Venice Biennale.
Marin first visited Maine in the summer of 1914 and from that point onward, found great inspiration in the landscape and scenery of the state.
The Spotlight exhibition precedes the gallery's forthcoming presentation at Frieze Masters in London (October 14–18), where we will further highlight the work of John Marin in the context of the Stieglitz Circle and the evolution of American modernism.
Schoelkopf Gallery is the exclusive worldwide representative of the John Marin Foundation.
