Manierre Dawson: Early Abstraction presents the early, transformative paintings of one of America’s most innovative and inventive artists, nearly a century following his first exhibition in the 1913 Armory Show. Often overlooked, but among the first true abstract painters in America, Dawson first explored non-representational painting in the years between 1910 and 1914, during his travels through Europe. Already advancing in Europe at the time was the shift towards Expressionism, which favored an abundant use of color over formal perspective and line. Manierre Dawson: Early Abstraction aims to explore Dawson’s use of abstraction in the early, generative years of American expression when few others did, and the impact that this journey to pure abstraction would have on Dawson’s career, and on American modernism.
