True to Nature celebrates the contributions of four painters-Georgia O'Keeffe, Ida O'Keeffe, Henrietta Shore, and Helen Torr-who shared the unique opportunities and challenges of women artists working in the early twentieth century.
At the height of the 1960s, Norman Lewis and Romare Bearden were frequent collaborators in addressing the role of the artist amidst vast societal and racial inequality. The convergence of these artists and their practices provided a platform for underrepresented artists to communicate their cultural, social and aesthetic concerns as a vehicle for change. This exhibition celebrates the collages, paintings, and works on paper by Lewis and Bearden, both pioneers in modernist abstraction and figuration, whose achievements came to a crescendo at a time when few critics paid attention.
The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. We are located at 390 Broadway, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10013.
