• Schoelkopf Gallery presents Thomas Hart Benton and Virginia Berresford on Martha's Vineyard – a dynamic selection of paintings, works on paper, and prints chronicling the intertwining lives of Virginia Berresford and Thomas Hart Benton on Martha’s Vineyard.

Virginia Berresford and Thomas Hart Benton both traveled extensively. Benton traversed the Americas in a quest to paint the country in its entirety, and Berresford journeyed across Europe, seeking to capture the dynamic coastlines of Greece, France and Ireland. However, both artists found a lasting home on Martha’s Vineyard, and produced among the most important 20th Century paintings of their respective careers on the Massachusetts island. Through this shared sense of place, the presentation brings together key works by Berresford, an artist who has historically been overlooked, into a unique dialogue with Benton, one the most iconic painters of modern life in America. Together, their works reflect parallel yet distinct interpretations of the modern American experience.
