"...the enchanting watercolor, Pumpkin Shadow, a figure study, we might say, created by the shadow cast from a large pumpkin that in reality sits tentatively upon a rocky ledge at Monhegan but pictorially seems to float independently, atop the heavy shadow-body that strides—that dances?— across the rocks. We associate pumpkins with jack-o-lanterns, and so we can imagine that this one has a face, turned toward the sun, perhaps, the black-suited figure thus seen from behind, its expression indeterminate and its identity concealed in a pumpkin-head mask. It is a figure that Wyeth identified with—the conceit he used for his own self-portrait in 1972."
