John Marin American, 1870-1953
45.7 x 55.9 cm
West Point, Maine, exemplifies the experimentation in mark-making and virtuosity in watercolor for which John Marin drew great critical acclaim. Marin juxtaposed passages of wet-on-wet paint application with improvised shorthand strokes. At this high point in his career, Marin started experimenting with wedge-shaped forms and strong diagonals in his compositions, evidenced by the black diagonals framing the foreground and the rocky outcrop on the horizon. The present work depicts a view of West Point, Maine, located in Casco Bay, and deftly reflects the primal forces of the Maine coast that captivated Marin and inspired his energetic and varied application of paint.
