Joseph Cornell’s relationship with Robert Schoelkopf began when the artist’s brother, Robert, died. Cornell sought a venue for a memorial exhibition of the Robert’s drawings and Joseph’s collages that incorporated them. “Schoelkopf was a fan of [Cornell’s] work,” Cornell’s biographer records, “and was delighted when Cornell wandered in one day to discuss the possibility of a memorial exhibition for Robert. Without hesitation, Schoelkopf put the show on his winter schedule” (Deborah Solomon, Utopia Parkway, 2015, p. 651).
