Max Weber's Flowers (1944) showcases the artist's enduring dedication to formal experimentation, giving rise to a distinctly American modernist aesthetic. Flowers remains at the threshold of reality and reinvention. While elements of the painting directly reference a still life of flowers in a vase, the ethereal, hovering shadows and large-scale shapes embrace a surreal quality reminiscent of the work of Surrealists Joan Miró and Yves Tanguy.Provenance
