Max Weber's Three Tulips (1908) is a lyrical testament to a longstanding motif within the broader still life genre—a vase of flowers on a table. The present example relates to a work painted in 1888–90 by Paul Cézanne, who deeply influenced Weber and many other modernists (Tulips in a Vase; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena). After Weber produced this version in 1908, artists continued to explore similar compositions, including Charles Sheeler, who also rendered red tulips on a pastel blue ground in Tulips (c. 1925-26).Provenance
