The print Duell presents the dramatic subject he addressed in his masterwork of the same title–the major oil painting that was accepted to the important “Sonderbund” exhibition in Cologne (1912, Art Bridges). In creating this print the following year, Bloch maintained the overall compositional layout, using similar landscape features while slightly altering the three figure groupings, and retaining the powerful moment of the contest just played out.Provenance
