They collectively represent the towns of Dover, Rockaway, and Denville, New Jersey that abut one another along today's Route 80. The artist must have visited these three locations on a vigorous sketching expedition, demonstrating that this painter, while extraordinarily modern, remained committed to working from life. An ink sketch on the verso is similarly annotated, making reference to the canal and tow path that may be in view in the lower extreme on the recto.
