Schoelkopf Gallery is the exclusive worldwide representative of Richard Estes.

Richard Estes remains the leading figure in photorealist painting, skillfully transforming ordinary subjects into captivating visual narratives. The L Train at 14th Street exemplifies Estes' enduring fascination with travel and transportation hubs, especially within his beloved New York City. Estes initiated his artistic journey in the 1960s, focusing on creating hard-edged portrayals of the New York Cityscape—a tradition he continues to uphold today.

In the present painting, Estes masterfully captures a New York City subway train stopped at a station platform. The repetition of lines and forms mirrors movement of a subway car, creating a familiar sensory experience for the viewer. This focus on capturing the dynamic energy of movement draws parallels to earlier avant-garde artists of the twentieth century, such as the Italian Futurists and British Vorticists. At the same time, the play of light and glare on the reflective glass generates abstract patterns within the composition contained within the architectural elements of the subway's window. This balance of abstract and hyper-realist elements create a dynamic composition that invites viewers to closely examine the painting and unravel its multitude of angles and perspectives.
