This work is assumed to be that recorded in the Dawson Record under the heading "1918": "Brown Equation, 20 x 18, canvas." Although Dawson inscribed this work with the date 1919, he listed it in the Dawson Record with the 1918 works. The artist's earlier listing may indicate his further reworking of the painting before it was signed at a final, 1919 completion.
