Marsden Hartley American, 1877-1943
54.6 x 69.8 cm
Painted during Marsden Hartley’s celebrated late Maine period, Camden Hills from Baker’s Island, Penobscot Bay, Maine, exemplifies the artist’s powerful reinvention of the New England landscape as a vehicle for modern expression. Through flattened forms, emphatic dark outlines, and vigorous, rhythmic brushwork, Hartley transforms the rugged Maine coast into a composition alive with the movement of the sea and temporal effects on land. The painting brings together the Maine landscape tradition of nineteenth-century American painting and the formal experimentation of modernism, while its spontaneous handling anticipates the expressive concerns of Abstract Expressionism. One of only approximately six examples from Hartley’s celebrated coastal seascape series of 1937-1942 remaining in private hands, the works offers a rare opportunity to acquire a major painting from the final chapter of the artist’s storied career.
