Norman Lewis American, 1909-1979
49.5 x 64.8 cm
As a crucial member of the first generation of Abstract Expressionists, Norman Lewis remained committed to the universality of abstraction. Defying characterization throughout his artistic development, Lewis explored a multitude of styles, motifs, and materials. Untitled evidences a through line of the artist's career—his trailblazing experimentation with technique and materials. In the present painting, Lewis achieved a richly textured surface by roughening and rubbing the freshly applied pigments, harnessing the woven textures and absorbent nature of the paper. Lewis infused a hazy, atmospheric quality in the work; the vibrant spheres veiled among mists of blue paint are evocative of a twilight sun reflected on water.
