John Marin, Alfred Stieglitz, and the Making of American Modern Art
Schoelkopf Gallery is pleased to return to Frieze Masters for the fourth time with a presentation highlighting the significance and lasting influence of The Stieglitz Circle and American modern art.
At Frieze Masters, the Schoelkopf Gallery presentation will feature works by Oscar Bluemner, Charles Demuth, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, Stanton Macdonald-Wright, John Marin, and Alfred Maurer.
2026 marks both the gallery’s 25th anniversary and the 250th birthday of the United States. To recognize these significant milestones, Schoelkopf Gallery is presenting a yearlong program that offers a broad perspective on the legacy and impact of American art from the 19th century to today. Within this area of focus, the gallery has a particular expertise and dedication to American modernism, which is highlighted in this Frieze Masters presentation.
In the first half of the 20th century, Alfred Stieglitz played a pivotal role in defining and promoting American art through the exhibitions he mounted and the avant-garde creative community he fostered. In addition to being an influential photographer, publisher, and all-around impresario, Stieglitz ran several important galleries in New York throughout his career, including 291 gallery, The Intimate Gallery, and An American Place. It was through these galleries that Stieglitz exhibited and supported the work of artists he championed.
A selection of notable works by John Marin will anchor the Frieze Masters presentation. The booth will feature several oil paintings from Marin’s Weehawken Sequence (c. 1916) as well as watercolors depicting scenes in Maine, Pennsylvania, and Tyrol, Austria. Marin’s work is distinguished by his expressive use of line, form, and color. His innovative approach to abstraction and watercolor as a primary medium earned him significant critical and commercial success during his lifetime. In 1950, Marin became the first American artist to receive a retrospective exhibition at the Venice Biennale. His Sea Forms in Greys and Whites (1944) was included in the Venice exhibition and will be featured in the gallery’s Frieze Masters booth.
Alfred Stieglitz was a devoted advocate of Marin’s work and played a key role in his cultural and commercial success. Schoelkopf Gallery is the exclusive worldwide representative of the John Marin Foundation.
Arthur Dove was one of the earliest proponents of abstraction and non-representational art in the United States. Throughout his career, Dove challenged traditional modes of expression, cementing his status as a pioneering painter and thinker within the emergence of abstraction in 20th century modernism. At Frieze Masters, the gallery will present a series of Dove’s intimately-scaled gouaches from the 1940s alongside Music, a significant oil painting from 1913.
Two works by Stanton Macdonald-Wright are featured in the presentation, tracing the evolution of the artist’s style from the 1910s to the 1960s. Macdonald-Wright was the co-founder of an artistic approach called Synchromism (meaning “with color”), which connected the qualities of color to those of music. On view at Frieze Masters, his 1914 ink and watercolor work, Conception Life-Cycle Series No. 11: Tinted Sketch for Synchromy in Blue-Violet, reflects Macdonald-Wright’s Synchromist philosophy, which established color as an independent expressive and formal element.
Marsden Hartley is recognized for his significant contributions to American modernism and was a pivotal figure in Alfred Stieglitz’s circle of artists who influenced and defined the movement. The gallery’s Frieze Masters presentation will showcase an important abstract work from 1916 and two of Hartley’s notable Maine landscapes from 1908–09 and 1938, respectively.
Overall, Schoelkopf Gallery’s presentation at Frieze Masters emphasizes the important role of the Stieglitz Circle in the legacy of American modernism and underscores the gallery’s position as a leader in the field of American art.
